I have enjoyed making music with a G string too. I usually use singles, but have been known to use fives.

My parents told me I was going out for the football team, and when I got good enough, I would be fitted for pads and a "sousaphone". Well, I was on the football field a lot, so I trusted them. Does anyone have the number of a lawyer who's been successful in offspring suing parents?

T4S, I think the reason folks have chosen the humorous approach is that you've actually asked a very personal question. Essentially, "why do we do what we do?" Without getting too philosophical, I'll just say that I like the way music makes me feel, and especially the ability to share those feelings with others. (Sometimes many others, sometimes just a few drunks at the local bar, but you get the idea.) I feel like if I can brighten the lives of just a few folks, even for just a short amount of time, then I am in my own way making the world a better place to be, if only on a microscopic level. That's the same reason I teach, really. Imagine, if even half the kids who take band/orchestra/lessons get something out of it, and go on to share that with others, it's exponential! Like a great pyramid scheme... Music gives me hope that maybe this world will turn out OK after all. (Sorry, I said I wouldn't get philosophical. )

I must take T4S seriously,even though a college freshman should spell better than that.
You try different things to see if you are successful at them and you jettison activities that don't work out.
The Marine Corps spent big bucks to train me as an aircraft electrician but I would look into a junction box and all those wires would look like spagetti. I also can listen to a large orchestra and tell who is screwing up.
It's a matter of learning where your talent is strong and taking off in that direction. Music has been easy for me and with moderate hard work I can find my way to the cutting edge.
Talented teachers or carpenters don't usually get the accolades musicians or athletes do.
