What is your main axe?

Post by Z-Tuba Dude »

It may seem like an odd question ---- but I was just curious about the demographics of our little board, here.

How many of you are PRIMARILY euphonium players, and how many of you are PRIMARILY tuba players?

Depends on what the gig is. I would rather play tuba all the time but there is pressure to do trumpet rides and rhythm instruments or guitar.
This weekend, John Reno, our guitarist was booked and we got a call from a group who needed entertaining on very short notice. He had our small P.A..set up for his gig so I had to lug the big system with only three speakers by my onesies and pick and sing alone. I try to avoid doing a single song guy gig because I am rusty and am forced to read lyrics on the job and that is unprofessional. However if I hadn't shown up they wouldn't have had anybody and they all said I was better than nothing.

You can't beat a Michigan-style single-bit to get the job done:

In contrast to TubeNet, Tuba-Euphorum probably has reciprocal demographics, i.e. a higher percentage of euph players than tuba players.

(french) horn
I could get paid any day for playing violin, but I hate playing the thing at this point in my life.

Lately my main axe is a Besson 983 Eb tuba, although I play BBb tuba almost as often. I have been thinking of just sticking to the Eb because it is such a versatile horn, but I have so much fun with the others that I'm not ready to do it yet. Once I get too old to lug around the big horns I expect that I will go to Eb exclusively.

These days my main axe is a baton. However, I think conducting middle and high school students with an actual axe such as Chuck depicted could be very appealing.

P.S. I did vote for tuba.

I just spent 4 years finishing up a tuba performance degree, so I guess you would say tuba. But I love every chance to play euphonium and actually play more bass trombone now than either of the previous two. (That's currently what I'm being payed to play.)
