One of my sons, Chris Troiano, is currently doing his doctoral studies at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA., majoring in euphonium performance. His thesis deals with Brass Bands of the Civil War period. He started a Civil War Brass Band at GMU. They are currently acquiring period instruments and they wear replica hats and coats. It’s all very interesting to me, as I was a member of the Old Bethpage Restoration Village Brass Band on Long Island for over 30 years.

Chris, along with his co-host, another doctoral euphonium major, Stephen Cannistraci, created this podcast where they interview prominent people in this field of early American brass bands.

Just listened to this last week. Super interesting. Going to go back and listen to some of the other episodes now.

I listened to the episode with Mark Jenkins yesterday. That was a really interesting history of the Marine Band and also the euphonium.

I’ve listened to all of the 18 episodes that were posted. After all, my son and his friend created the podcast. Maybe it’s partly because I played in a Civil War brass band on LI for over 30 years, but during those times, I wasn’t aware of the history involved, as I am now due to listening to these podcasts. There is a recent episode featuring our own, Jonathan Hodgetts, of Wessex. The most recent episode features Garman L. Bowers Jr. This one is different because Garman deals with Civil War drum restorations and reproductions. It’s all very interesting! Check these out when you have time!
