This Wednesday we celebrate the birthday of Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky - June 17, 1882 – April 6 1971; one of the greatest musical minds to live in both the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Minnesota Orchestra recorded his le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) for San Francisco-based Reference Recordings and the recording was a Grammy Award Nominee in the Best Engineered Classical Recording category. This audiophile label now offers it in eight different file formats.
More recently they’ve created a 45 rpm half-speed mastered 180 gram virgin vinyl “Mastercut LP” which won the 2016 Rocky Mountain International Hi Fi Press Award for Best Audiophile Recording – Analogue. I had the thrill of playing on a number of Minnesota Orchestra performances alongside Ross Tolbert, Principal Tubaist, 1966-2004, to include these recording sessions.
