Listening

Hello!
Lately, Mr. Pokorny has been referring to my listening lists in his masterclasses. I have disabled my old website as it was UGA centric and I have moved on. As soon as I understand the landscape at Michigan, I will create another site. Until then, I wanted to post my listening lists so that when Gene refers to them, there is a place where people can find them.
I am a HUGE believer in extensive and active listening as a way that one can improve his or her musicianship. I have had my students over the years do an assignment called Tune of the Week, in which they listen to a recording and let me know their thoughts on both the piece and the performance. It has been a great window into the minds of of students and it also serves as a good writing exercise for them. I will provide the "TOW Classic" list, which is what I have used for the past 20 years or so. After that, I will provide an updated list that I intend to use at UM. Finally, I will provide a "Curiosity List" of performers and composers to try.
We all have time now. I encourage you to listen to something new every day. Your vocabulary will improve as a result!
Cheers!

Great post. Hope things go well for you in Michigan. By the way, I think you should have included the world's best orchestra----

Glad to see many non-tuba works on your list. Some of the most influential works to me have been by Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, and others who never originally wrote for tuba. Although their works sound awfully good on it
Much is lost by those who stick their head in the sand and only listen to "tuba music". I was lucky to have discovered WQXR at a young age when it was still at full power and devoured classical music of all periods and styles. Now, with YouTube and other streaming options, the sky is the limit for listening opportunities!

Very cool.
I would add Bruce Broughton's score to Silverado to the movie music list. And the movie "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", by Miles Goodman.
And Philip Glass to the 20th-Century composer list.
I've listened to well over a dozen of your semester listening works in just the last month.
