Just plunked down my credit card on a Cerveny 601 from Uwe Scheider's tubashop.de. The horn looks terrific, but I have not tried the instrument. Getting a little nervous, but from what I have been reading here, the 601s sound like they are a little more dependable from a quality standpoint than some of the other Cerveny products.

Any opinions and/or reassurance would be appreciated.

Tom McGrady posted some YouTube videos a while back of him playing one of these, side by side with an Alexander.

The Cerveny has a huge sound, and has a huge sound. It also has a huge sound. In addition, the sound is huge.

I think mouthpiece choice might be important, to get enough focus out of the horn; you're not going to get a lot of edge and bite naturally, but you just have to learn how to give it what it needs. It's a huge bore.

Buckle up, it's going to be fun. Too bad those few dents are there, but even with them, it's a nice looking tuba. It's also very tall, so I hope it fits in your car.

Thanks- I saw those videos! Quite impressive. I am planning on using the Conn Helleberg I always play these days. I am really buying it for the huge sound, which I find greatly enhances one's mood. (I am a trombone player by profession).

I used my Cerveny 601-5MR in orchestra for three years. It's a big horn, but I would classify it as a 5/4. It is mouthpiece sensitive. It shipped with a, get this, generic 24AW. It sounded OK with that, but I switched to a PT-50 which the horn thanked me for. (The switch was because a Chicago Symphony associate conductor was vacationing here rehearsing our orchestra, and she felt my big *** solo whamo low C in Strauss' Death and Transfiguration needed a little more juice. The PT-50 did the job. She smiled. The 601 is quite large but is ergonomically OK--- if you are a large and strong person, that is. My horn was a 4+1 with the 5th rotor control lever on the left side. I loved it configured like that. Enjoy your horn. Never give up on it. It will reward you.

I've owned several of these over the years. For big stuff I, like you, used a Conn Helleberg and for quintet and other smaller lighter stuff a Mirafone C4(they have different numbers now). It never disappointed. You got a great horn there. Ed

My other memory of these is that the slots are kind of wide... So you need to learn where to put the notes. Do this, and you will avoid all woodiness and vagueness in the notes.

Plenty of air, and stay on top of it so that you are showing the tuba where to go, not the other way around (with huge tubas, that can seem more natural, but once you get in control, you'll be all set).

Let us know when it gets to you! Based on recent shipping experiences, expect a possible delay in shipping for customs. Most things I had fro Europe this spring took an extra 4-6 weeks to get delivered. Much smaller than a tuba... But still, that's a long time.

I've owned Cerveny horns before and really liked them. Enjoy your new horn!

I love these horns! I used to own a CC 601, and now I own a BBb version. I have had the best luck with a Stofer Geib mouthpiece. Definitely give one a try!

It was a moth to the flame situation... been dreaming about owning one since I was a young man in my 50s. Tried a brand new 691 when I was in Prague once and I thought it was magnificent. Thanks for all the positive posts!
