What are the most commonly sought after 6/4 horns for 12,000 price range?

That was my first thought, too. You could get a dozen old 20J's for that budget, or at least a handful of reconditioned ones.
Seriously though, I'll bet someone (Sam Gnagey?) could build you a fantastic tuba for considerably less than 12K. Maybe it's the romantic in me, but I just love the idea of resurrecting those old beasts, and turning them into not only works of art (check out some of the work Bloke, Matt W., Lee S. and Dan O. have done) but great-playing tubas as well.

Where do they sell these horns? i will be looking to buy very soon. within 2 months. so i need to get the ball rolling.

I must throw in a vote for the PT-6/PT-6P. (just over or under $10K new depending on finish and valve selection). This is defintely NOT a 5/4 but a small 6/4 CC Tuba that puts out tons of sound. It ended up being my choice. If you want a true large 6/4 maybe try the PT-7P. The 2165 puts out more sound than the PT-6 but with a loss in clarity for most players. I would also have to throw in a vote for the Gronitz if you're willing to patient and wait for one. They are very good playing horns but you could wait up to a year to get one. It was almost an eight month wait last time I believe. Again, if you are a patient person who wants to save a lot of money you may want to sit down with a row of Neptunes and find a good one. They put out a LOT of sound for the money but you should put in time with a tuner and a good set of ears for evenness.

Since I own a beautiful silver-plate-Dillon-bought 2165 which isn't used anymore...I would put in a vote for the MW2165...

Someday I will get up the courage to put it up for sale. But I don't want to have to ship it all over the place. I bought it direct from Matt at Dillons, and know it is a great horn...but when I want to sell it, it probably won't be that easy. You get my drift? It just isn't something I want to deal with.

You can have my Holton 6/4 CC for $7,100. As a point of comparison, I am selling it because I bought a Gronitz PCK that is just wonderful and costs well under $12,000 if you can locate one. I tried a lot of horns and I think the Gronitz is about as good (and as loud) as anything available at any price. Definately smaller than my Holton 6/4, but what isn't?

A friend of mine is selling a NEARLY NEW CONDITION 2165 for $8,000 if you're interested.

I've currently got a Rusk-Cut 1915 (or so) York CC (cut down from a BB-flat). Fantastic horn and will consider taking less than posted for it (perhaps something near your mentioned price-range). Please refer to the post in the FOR SALE section...here:
