Starting to shop around a bit for a Bb tuba. Looking at the Eastman EBB534 and the King 2341. Very similar looking tubas but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience playing either or recommendations. Thanks

They play extremely similarly and are both well made instruments. Very easy to control, great centering on almost all notes, and both offer good response. The King would only edge out the eastman if one were looking at long term build quality. The older kings with the detachable bells were built like brick s*** houses. I think the newer ones might be a little lighter, but very comparable in terms of build quality with Eastmans. Right now the two are similarly priced (~1k difference) and you really can't go wrong either way.

Seriously, look at the Wessex. I have 2 of them (Linz, Prokofiev) and play them all the time.

Thanks- Their Dragon tuba is one I was looking at as well. It's good to hear the build quality of the Wessex and Eastman tubas is pretty solid. There's a small part of me that says buy American I think since I grew up in the midwest but I also don't own a car made in the US so.....!

Some will argue that the build quality of the Eastman is superior to new Kings. From what I hear regarding the the cheap/thin brass in new King sousaphones and the recent layoffs at Conn-Selmer, this may be something to consider. If I were you, I would look at the following options if you’re after a big-bell American BBb sound:
A USED 2341, add extra water key in 3rd valve loop to avoid “king spin” and upgrade to MAW valves for quicker response and easier low register.
Eastman 534 - last I checked there was a used one at Baltimore Brass, maybe Dillon too
The new Mack Brass ZO piston BBb - these are supposed to be incredible
The used Wessex Prokofiev Mike Parker is selling here in the FS forum (if you can extend your budget)
AVOID: Wessex Viverna (not sure is Dragon has same issues, so beware)
