Help Me Identify an instrument

Post by DiveBomber »

My Great-great-great-great-grandfather seems to be some sort of tuba/baritone/euphonium player. I found a picture of him holding his instrument while standing with his band. I was wondering if any of you could help me identify what he was playing on? The picture has a note that says he was a founding member of a brass band in 1866 but I think this picture was likely taken after that. He died in 1907 so it can't be anymore recent than that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not an expert by any means compared to others around here, but I would say you’re looking at a bass saxhorn (the predecessor to the modern tuba), most likely in Eb by the shape and size next to the smaller (presumably Bb) saxhorns.

It also would not be uncommon in this era to see over the shoulder (bell facing backwards) varieties of these instruments in pictures where the band is on the march.

Cool family photo!

Not Berliner Pumpen, but Sax Hybrid valves. These are a bit longer than Berlin valves, more looking like a Perinet, but still have all ports in one level.
