One of the chants of the tuba section at my daughter's high school was:
WE DON'T WEAR NO STINKIN' HATS

I think berets should be reserved for 'Special Forces'.

Berets were neat when a few bands used them. Now you go to a HS marching contest and more have them than don't.
Want to be really different? You should all grow matching sideburns (ladies included), than shave off one of them. If you shape the other one just right it'll look like you're all wearing wireless microphone headsets.

I once saw a college sousa line wearing jester hats(with bells) in the school's colors. Now if I could only find a camo jester hat...

Shoot, we were too good for berets at my school. We went the extra mile and spent the $35 for the Kangol golfers hats. Man, I felt spiffy wearing that thing, and it wore a lot better and was more comfortable than the shakos everyone else was wearing.
Hats for them Tuba Cats

My High School Hat history
Freshman year playing Fiberglass Sousaphone the whole band had black berets
-we didn't have real uniforms yet, school was brand new.
Sophomore year still Sousie, after fundraising we had real uniforms,
with that sort of taller than a police hat, shorter than a shako hat.
Junior year different school in different state, still a FG sousie
rest of the band had black shakos, we tubas were bare headed.
Senior Year playing new King 1140 convertables, still no hat.
Stange as seems, I prefered not having a hat, everyone else had a hat box
and a plume tube to keep track of.

Sure the berets are kind of silly, but given the choice, I'd take a beret over a shako any day (for the sheer convenience alone).

Now i love that idea, its perfectly logicle and i believe as section leader i have the choice on what the sousa line will wear. although my director thinks otherwise.

Does this indicate that you believe the director of the band should not have the authority to determine what the band wears? My personal opinion is that he alone has the right to make that decision. Should he wish to allow the section leader to make this determination, that is the DIRECTOR'S choice.
Just my opinion.

that is the DIRECTOR'S choice.
Yeah,...what he said.

To carry this a step further, I never thought I would miss the "Garrison Cap", until it was replaced by the beret.
(The Garrison Cap was also known by other colorful monikers in the Army, if you do not know what I am talking about). Not to be confused with the Service Cap.

Like other headwear, it depends on who's doing the wearing:
How about one of these?

Were wore black bandanas my senior year in high school.
7th grade- beret (tuba)
8th, 9th grade- trojan-style helmet (marching baritone)
10th grade- beret (back to tuba)
11th grade- trojan-style helmet (drum major)
12th grade- bandana (back to tuba)
college- VTubas baseball cap
I personally like the fitted baseball cap. Put the school's name on it and tuba section if you prefer.
