I'm pinching pennies to save up for a "contrabass" Cimbasso, in either CC or BBb. I love the huge sound of it on film scores where John van Houten or others play it and prefer it to the sound of F Cimbassi or other horns.
I'm wondering if anyone here who owns or has played one can chime in on an inquiry of mine; do CC Cimbassi, such as the one built by Rudi Meinl, have a solid, brassy low C? (C2 in SPN). Some CC Tubas I've played I found rather dead on that note (not capable of chainsawing easily), though I'd expect that less important to Tubas since they're more about foundation of sound rather than bite.
If CC Cimbassi tend to have a dead zone around there I might opt for a BBb one instead; I play a BBb Contrabass Trombone (Mirafone) and it's alright, but I'm expecting that a bigger horn with a slightly higher pitch and resting on a peg might be more enjoyable to play.
Question for anyone with a CC Cimbasso
