Face Mask for Tuba Playing

Post by kprinz »

Hi all:

I don't want to start a debate on the legitimacy using face masks while playing, but I would like to know if anyone has found a halfway decent musician's facemask to use while playing tuba.

I must wear one for my job; however, all of the ones I've tried have the same issue. When I inhale, I suck the mask into my mouth or in between my mouth and the mouthpiece. It then interferes with the buzz.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

If You´re actually forced to wear a mask DURING playing, it might help to reinforce the MP-opening with a ring of silicone or wire, sewn onto the fabric.
Others make use of more rigid material, such as these:

You might have to experiment with something custom-made: maybe some kind of bottomless basket covered with mask fabric.
