Doc AsKew hadn't been super active in the international tuba community the past couple of years, as he had been gradually promoted to more administrative duties (most recently, head of the UNC Greensboro School of Music), but his impact and influence on the tuba world was great. Doc was a past president of ITEA, host of the 2002 ITEC in Greensboro, NC, frequent performer all around the Southeast and abroad, etc.

More than that, though, Doc AsKew was a great person. He was kind and courteous and enthusiastic. Doc gave you the same respect and dignity if you were a shy incoming freshman with sticky valves as if you were a global music star. Doc's warm personality and kindness made an impression on everyone. I can't count how many other former students list Doc as the kind of teacher and person they most wished to emulate.

I was fortunate to experience his generosity and openmindedness first hand during ITEC in Budapest.
Inspiring conversation in the basement-Tubajazz-bar opposite Ferenc Liszt University led to him granting me a free lesson to get me started on my first CC-tuba I had acquired just on the day before the festival.
Ahh those old times...

He must have loved to teach, or else he would not have agreed to squeeze that appointment into his schedule and pass on advice to a hobbyist.
And an ear-opening lesson that was !!

Wow!! Just heard the news. Spoke with him on the phone on several occasions over the years. He was a great resource and had a wealth of knowledge. He always had the time to share and gave me great advice. He will surely be missed.
