My needs have changed a bit, and I would like to hear some thoughts about what might suit me better. I have a 21 year-old PT-6P that is somewhat larger and heavier than I really need. I would like a horn with lighter valves, a quick response, and intonation that works without a lot of fuss. A lighter overall weight would be nice, but I still need to retain a large, clear, sound that is resonant enough to play bottom parts in a tuba quartet. A 4/4 size horn with a fifth valve would seem to be indicated. What's out there? Thanks for your suggestions.

Look at the Miraphone horns. The 1291/2/3 are great with solid intonation and low registers. I'd pick the 1293, I owned one for a while and the sound is just as broad as a Pt-6 but without the weight and intonation weirdness.

The 291 Bruckner is a 5 rotary horn and is also a wonderful player as well. Pretty rare on the used market but check one out if you can. That would be my second choice. I might add that this one will be much easier to maintain. These big piston horns we love are a hassle to empty all the water out of, but anything rotary will just go straight down!

The Eastman ECB832 or Miraphone 188 would be hard to beat.

188. Still the simplest point-and-shoot horn out there IMO, and I've already decided one of these will be my "last" horn. This is one of the few horns I would buy with no / very limited need to play first before purchasing. If you have to have a piston horn, there are TONS of options that are all really good several of which are mentioned here.

Don't overlook the Wessex. They are making good instruments at an affordable price.
