Recordings of MW 2165 (besides Warren Deck)

Post by Triggerfish »

Just wondering if anyone knows any recordings/tuba players that use the MW 2165 that aren't Warren Deck? I just want a more comprehensive picture of how this horn handles.

I’d expect a lot of the Buffalo recordings between ~1990 and 2006 or so to feature Don Harry on his 2165 (maybe on Naxos?). Earlier would be his Cerveny or Alexander. Later he got a hold of a Dillion-rebuilt Lyon and Healy and even more recently was playing a lot of BBb.

Of course, he sounds great on every horn, ymmv,

Patrick Harrild of the London Symphony used a 2165 for many recordings from the mid-90s to 2017.

Also, I highly recommend listening to recordings of the Dallas Symphony with Litton on the Delos label. Matt Good used his 2165 in that orchestra from 1995 until around 2005. For a great representation of what a 2165 can do in an orchestra, check out the recordings Mahler 2, Mahler 3, and Tchaikovsky 1812. Power and clarity from a 6/4 CC.

Here's a YouTube link to the Dallas 1812 recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeHEe3QU68E

Matt Good could also make that 2165 work for more subtle rep. Here's a great recording of Gershwin's "American in Paris": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaSPZACEYtY

I have several recordings where I'm playing my 2165 (Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Utah Symphony and Empire Brass quintet). Two of my favorites are the 2016 Utah Symphony recording of Alexander Nevsky, and the 1999 Empire Brass Quintet recording, "The glory of Gabrieli." In the 1989 Empire Brass recording, "Music of Gabrieli" I'm playing my 5/4 Hirsbrunner. Two VERY different sounds!
