When I saw them live many years ago (before their second album) Sam was playing his Meinl Weston CC 4 valve* rotary. It was the same horn he played when I saw him with Empire Brass before that. Don’t know the model.

Edited: * apparently it was a 5 valve. My bad.

This Meinl-Weston 5-rotary CC with straight bell was his main horn through all the years. He never contradicted that he "forgot to give it back" after finishing high school...
Some recordings he made on a Meinl-Weston 2145, but on the great "Brassy Night At The Opera" album he played a Yamaha. After he saw the album folder with a picture of him he asked me not to tell Gerhard Meinl about it, for he was under contract with Meinl-Weston back then (1997)

After that recording Sam told me he had used one of my mouthpieces on it, a 128 rim and P cup.

He used a Meinl Weston William Bell CC tuba. The Meinl Weston 2145 that is on the cover was called the "Sam Pilafian" model at that time. It was prettier than his Bell model and only used on the cover for show.
