Receipt from Custom Music in Royal Oak, MI

Post by Renodoc »

I grew up in suburban Detroit and have fond memories of Custom Music in the 80's. I could have sworn my parents were generous enough to buy me a tuba as a high school graduation gift. Turns out, I'm old and I was wrong. They bought me a tuba before my junior year of college (which I'm sure my dormmates at East Quad at Michigan were happy about). A few years ago I gave away the tuba to a local middle school. My mom was recently cleaning out her house and came across the receipts for the tuba and the case. Just thought I'd share these for anyone who worked at Custom back in the 80's. Image

I tried, unsuccessfully, to buy the same euphonium from Fred for about ten years back in the ‘70’s. It was a prototype Willson, labelled “W. Kurath”. Every time I went back it looked worse and Fred wanted more money for it. It picked up dents and lost lacquer. When I attempted to point out that, perhaps, its condition merited a lower price, Fred said the cost of replacing it in his inventory had increased. I sometimes wonder if it got boxed up when they moved and is still hiding in some corner of the shop.
