There sure seem to be a lot of key professionals using stands. I've heard them even argue that the better mechanical connection to the floor improves resonance. I'm not sure I buy that, but I definitely buy the argument that if you aren't having to hold up the instrument, getting rid of harmful tension is just that much easier.
That, and the high number of tuba players who have experienced debilitating back problems. I'll just keep using the stand, like I have been for 15 years.
