Hello Troops,
Gene Pokorny here. I am glad that you will be attending the Pokorny Seminar (P.S.) as a participant or as an auditor. I hope it will be a great exchange of information. I am usually quite jealous of the opportunity that most of you have in being able to learn from the great teachers/performers who are on staff at the P.S. ; jealous because I would like to learn from these incredible persons as well while I am leading my own classes.
Fortunately, you have the choice of attending any and all classes. In other words, just because you are a tuba player does not mean you are obligated to attend a tuba class; you can listen to any lecture/class by a trombone player if you choose. Some categories in the schedule (e.g. “Important Things”) will give all of the faculty and all the participants/auditors to gather and hear the ideas from the faculty which they feel are relevant in the music-making of their lives.
That topic has gone in many different directions.
In the remaining month before the start of the P.S., reflect that, as we come out of the pandemic, there are the usual school auditions but now a plethora of professional auditions which will be scheduled rather soon in orchestras and bands here and around the world. Tuba positions alone would include orchestras in Los Angeles, Utah, San Diego, Frankfurt, Dresden, etc., and bands in Washington, DC and around the USA.
As a tip, you may want to consider concentrating on this audition repertoire with faculty in addition to (or maybe instead of) the solo repertoire you may have contemplated bringing in for evaluation. Those on the faculty include players whose positive results in recent auditions will ensure good ideas and suggestions for your improvement.
Finally, having this seminar experience Northern Illinois University at DeKalb will be new for me and I am sure most others. I appreciate you being there as we initiate our first year on that campus.
See you soon.

Cheers,

Gene Pokorny
