WTB Sousaphone Chair

Post by tubajohn »

Anyone willing to let go of a chair so an old, old man can play a sousaphone again?

What sort of chair are you seeking?
For long sousaphone gigs, I found a stool at Goodwill for $5.

The "standard" souzy chair is a Wenger. There are now two or three different models. They are expensive. They rarely come up used. I use a standard music chair and rotate it so the back is out of the way of the bugle of the souzy. I know that doesn't help the load on the shoulder, so for myself I had a Conn 36K fiberglass souzy rebuilt for me. AFAIK, that is the lightest souzy out there @18 lbs. Again, "real" 36K souzys (meaning pre-cyborg) are now between 40 and 60 years old, so any one you find may need rebuilding. (Current 36K souzys are re-branded King souzys.) I see in your signature you have a King souzy, but you don't state whether it is brass or 'glass. Please tell us which you have.

60’s era brass, modified with a 4th valve.

Great! In the 60's through the 70's my high school didn't have all the money in the world. Our band director chose wisely. We had King souzys for both marching and concert. With the addition of the 4th valve, you have a do-it-all horn.
