Highschool Student wanting 5valve CC Tuba for college(FOUND)

Hi all,

My name is Jordan and I'm a high school sophomore (junior in the fall) in South-eastern Massachusetts looking for a 4/4 (or 5/4 depending on the horn) 5 valve CC Tuba for college. My budget is around $4500. Unfortunately, it is hard to find tubas in this area of the country unless I drive 4 hours to Dillon music so if the tuba is too far away, I implore you for a 7 day trial period. I will pay shipping. But that's if the seller is willing of course.

Both are great horns that I know off of the top of my head.

You can also contact Wessex Tubas (Wyvern, now, on here) or Tom McGrady of MackBrass who can help you get a Miraclone that should fit within your budget. There are plenty of more out there... you just have to look and be patient.

I saw the BMB on The Dillon website and personally I was interested in it but then I was told by my band directors that because BMB isn't nearly as reputable as a company like Miraphone, I would told to buy something more "reliable," No matter how I or the horn sounded. I have a friend who just graduated and was possibly considering selling me his Jupiter XO series CC in silver, which sounds beautiful, but again due to the fact that Jupiter isn't as well known as other brands, I was told not to consider it. It's a weird situation to be in. I'll look at the M185 on Baltimore Brass. If you have any opinions or advice about this situation, I'd love to hear it.

Your band director just isn't familiar with them and is saying something safe. The principal tuba players in the Chicago Symphony and the Buffalo Philharmonic, as well as the current president of the International Tuba Euphonium Association, among many other fine players, have BMB tubas. If it's what you want, get it and forget it. You'll be in good company.

Im selling my 6/4 BMB CC for 5,000 plus shipping if that is feasible in your budget. They really are the best bang for your buck if you are looking for a very good playing tuba but do not want to spend ten grand on a nice CC tuba.

Might be worth a trip to DC. Sanders 4/4 CC tuba, made by B&S in the 80s, for under 3k. These are good tubas.

Where are you located? I have an excellent Marzan slant-rotor CC 5/4 (Bohm & Meinl) here are the moment. With the 'on the fly' tuning capability you might find you don't really need a fifth valve.

Dont limit yourself just because your band director is not familiar with certain brands. There are a lot of great horns out there other than what your band director is familiar with. No matter what you get, as long as you take care of it, it will take care of you.

Haha I knew someone would ask. A B&S PT-4. Plays easy, plays great, large sound, but controllable. I'm sure it's nothing new to those you who have played one or maybe a pt-6 if that's as similar as I think it is, but to me it's like a whole new world coming from playing a beat up Jupiter BBb that my school owns.
