The last/only time I ever saw a recording bass mute was about 1980. It was an impressively HUGE Stonelined cup mute on display at a music conference. The $$$ was impressive also!

Hey! Don't knock it. In a small setting, it is a good mute. I have the baritone version. Yes, just like the tuba mute, it needed repositioning of the corks to fit properly, but it is worth it. I use it when I need to play a section that is either softer and lends itself to the mute, or when I am playing a section part doubling the bassoon parts which we do not have a bassoon in our community band. Underrated mute.
