Is that a Rotax rotor, or the "normal" kind? 1989... I just don't know when Rotax became a "thing"!

Elephant, I love all the detail. Don’t change!
With no exaggeration, these build threads are my favorite part of TubeNet.

Re: 1989 Kurath F Rebuild
Interesting, thanks! Yeah, it can take a while to get in touch with Willi, but I have always (eventually) gotten a reply. It certainly seems like a rotax valve would be a natural fit for the instrument, but what do I know!the elephant wrote:It is an old one made by (I suspect) Voigt. I have a brand new one and they appear identical, except the new one is thinner and lighter in both good and bad ways. This one is 20mm and the new one (for the Holton) is 21mm, and the rear caps are swappable and the cork plate and stop arm are, as well. The rotors and back cap do not interchange. The older one has thicker bearings and shaft.
I have tried to get Willy to sell me a Rotax but he can be difficult to get a hold of. I finally received a response asking me for clear photos of the parts I would like to replace so he can see if Willson has something that will work. A Rotax would be great, as would a new thumb ring/thumb lever bracket. I would also very much like to get some nickel silver outer slide tubing and two crooks.
Hmm...

Looks great Wade! What's your routine/materials for cleaning up the solder mess?

I'm curious, when you do the cleanup, will the brass still be tinted that red color in the photos? Or is that permanent? I really enjoy reading your posts. Very intriguing! Keep it up!

Re: 1989 Kurath F Rebuild
you may want to re-wrap the 4th circuit while you have it apart.

Terrific! Your posts are a huge draw for me in returning to TubeNet on a daily basis and seeing what progress has been made. Please let us know how the horn plays with all the repairs and modifications you have done. On to the Holton 345!!

That is a beautiful horn. All of your work has paid off! The Stofer-Geib mouthpieces are a favourite of mine as well.

Re: 1989 Kurath F Rebuild
I did use a Stofer-Geib on my Holton "Mammoth" 3 valve BBb from 1916. It worked really well.
