What to do about glue?

Post by Tubajug »

The neck on my helicon has some cracks in it that were sealed up with some sort of glue. What might I try to remove that? I torched a little bit of it just getting the brace and receiver off. Is there some solvent I could try? Grind it off? Torch it off?

I'm trying to salvage the neck either by patching it or brazing the cracks.

I took the less health - conscious approach and just torched it to blacken it, then sanded it off. Probably not the best approach, but it worked.

Thanks for the info. I was probably a bit hasty, but wanted to get it done. I'll certainly be more careful in the future. I figured it was ok when I toasted a little bit of it removing the receiver and it just melted, crisped up, then flaked off. Now to braze and/or patch all the cracks...

The glue wasn't holding anything together, it was just what they used to seal up some cracks in the neck. I'll post some pictures later (probably in my helicon thread). I'm just going to try my hand at salvaging this neck, so I needed all the glue off first.

Possibly, the only trouble would have been that the brass underneath is very dented and "wavy," not much of a "straight shot" with a razor blade.

Using the prefilled leadpipes? I've thought about it. I wrapped it all up in tape, just to see if the cracks really were the cause of the leaky/stuffy playing, but something else is going on. It still played really stuffy. I've flushed it with water and blown compressed air into the bugle through the large side of the MTS, but still can't figure out what's going on... I should probably move this discussion over to my thread about the helicon since the glue portion has been taken care, but... I'm typing it here already....

Yeah, fixing excessive uses of cyanoacrylate glue by so called "techs" is one hell of a pain... The few times I did have to burn it, I made sure to do it outside, with noone around, and with a gasmask. Back when I worked at a factory (as a clerk though, I didn't do the hard job), an employee actually died because of CA fumes, so I've been extremely careful with it...
