Replacement Leadpipe

Post by shinytuba7 »

I have a Conn 36J, and the leadpipe had a nice, large patch on it. It plays fine, but I'm wondering a couple of things:

- Could the patch have any affect on how the horn plays?
- Because of the age of the horn, would a custom leadpipe have to be bent?
- Would it be of any real benefit for it to get replaced?

Thanks for any and all responses in advance.

Short answer:

Yes
Yes
Yes

Long answer: there are literally hundreds of things that can affect a horn's playability. Take it to a good technician and have them check the patch for leaks, and then check the valves for wear. Diagnose the problem from there.

I would take 1st valve out, plug the leadpipe port with left hand, blow hard into the leadpipe, and feel around with my right hand for leaks. if not leaking and not dented, should be fine.

Although you could always try for an enhancement...if somebody finds a good formula for Conn replacement leadpipes that would be very interesting. My educated guess is that a little longer leadpipe, with a little smaller receiver, a little wider receiver brace, and a little longer solder to bell stack could be nice. could probably be done with the common A222.
