Where is the serial number or build date on Schillers?
Otherwise, how did you determine build dates?

I had heard (From Tom M, perhaps?) that they had changed their lacquer formulation to make it tougher. If that is so then it is probably not the type that simply flashes black as soon as a flame touches it. I don't want to have to strip back lots of lacquer for such a simple job, and I can probably use Heat Fence, but I am out right now. (I guess I need to mosey on over to my welding shop to get more...)

So either tonight or tomorrow the 4th slide assembly and that one pipe will come off and I will see how far I can get before the heat and gnats get the best of me and I have to pack it in for the day. I am hoping that I will have a well aligned 4th that is about 4" longer, that is fit to the horn properly, and has been cleaned up and spot lacquered.

Once that has been done and some of the mysteries have been figured out the rest of the work will go super quickly, like in one long day.
Hi Wade, i have been reading your blog and am interested in what you have written. As to how the lacquer reacts to a torch, if you stay on low heat and go slowly you can pull things apart and out them back without flashing the lacquer. The lacquer quality is actually very good as compared to what what Gronitz used on the piston F i modified recently. As soon as the torch hit the lacquer it went to black.

I wish you would have hit me up sooner as we did replace all the paddle assemblies on all our tuba models and went away from the standard round stock. When Jinbao came out with the pt15 inspired f tuba they did a nice job with the paddle assembly and that is what we are now using. These are much more robust as they use retangular stock instead of round.
