FWIW, I've often thought about the prospect of putting a side-action piston valve set on one of these tenor tubas....

However, as far as I can see, finding a suitable valve set presents problems. King baritone (.562) would be too small - the next (readily available) size, Conn tuba at .656, too large.

I'm sure there's a Chinese-made one somewhere inbetween, but getting one is the problem. Also, there is (was) a small bore E flat Conn set made at .625, but with 4 valves are as rare as hen's teeth (and is also probably too large).

Especially since they do that every day, in great numbers, and the overall cost will be less than your time making them that you would bill otherwise for other repairs!!!

Is there any decent recording examples of the sound of the instrument?

Such an interesting sounding instrument! Pretty close to what I imagined. I'd love to try a horn like this out sometime.

In defense of the term "euphonium" that ypu are denying this instrument, that name is not English in origin: that term was coined by a German maker - and the inventor - and adopted later by other manufacturers. The one anomaly is the spelling: "euphonion."

The euphonium is a German invention.

bloke wrote:My mouthpiece search (ONE, that does EVERYTHING darn well...and I have found mouthpieces that do this/that/the-other well) has been somewhat exhaustive, and has delved deep into esoterica.

Some common mouthpieces do pretty well, and some exotics do pretty well.

A friend of mine picked up a 50-to-60 year-old mouthpiece on eBay that (when tested, as I'm restoring/re-plating it for them for use on another type of instrument) out-performs all the rest.

I contacted the original (European) supplier, and they found (only) one (old/new: box covered with dust) on the shelf.
I will have it, soon. 8)

What is it? :? :?:
  Don't worry about it...I got the last one, and you don't play a kaiser bariton.
