Does the bell have a wreath? It's hard to tell.

If not, this may be a small li'l horn.

Holton tubas

Post by bisontuba »

Hi-
Since old Holton model tubas are being discussed, does anyone have any info or images of a Holton 'Richardson model' tuba?
Thanks-
mark

At the risk of being moved I have to ask, "Who played tuba on that recording?" Nice clip, great song, nice tuba.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

The horn belongs to one of my students. It had the bell wreath removed. Bell is in rough shape. It is indeed a fairly small horn. He doesn't have too much information on the horn.

Ah, so the bell is about 1/2" smaller in diameter than it would normally be. That makes sense. Thanks!

There is now a little history about the horn posted on the listing. Thanks Sam!

This went for $1124? What am I missing here? This horn has obviously been around before. Is it a POS?

This particular horn is not a POS. Nor is it the missing York. Its an OK BBb tuba. It has been in Miami, Oklahoma for at least the past 3 years. I believe there is a twin of this horn out there. My unreliable sources tell me that both were brought to Oklahoma at the same time several years ago.

A 5J with a creased bell just went for $641. Rephrased, my question might rather have been, " Is the market a bit weak right now?". I do appreciate you pro repair guys' feedback. I'm pretty sure of myself buying and selling trombones, but I have to watch out in the tuba market. I've only bought one on E-bay and it turned out to be a nice horn, but only after Lee put a bunch of work into it.

The person who sold the instrument was happy with what he got. It really is a decent horn. Nothing spectacular, but not a dog either. The person who bought it didn't get a great deal, nor did he get ripped off. I would say that the market was right in this case.
