Amati F-helikon .. worth the money?

Post by bstevens »

Hi

I am thinking of buying this horn - any comments? Worth the cash? Seems a touch overpriced but they are quite rare to pick up and seems like the horn is in good shape ... can get it for approx. $1600.

(The ebay auction is finished by the way)

I guess I just need other opinions to help my rubber arm from being bent, or bending it more so I buy it :) ...

Thanks,
Bruce

I don't know if you got a second-chance offer from the seller....but be very, very wary of these.

My own ebay ID was stolen and used to submit such second-chance offers to people. Of course those offers were bogus, and hopefully no one bit on them, but I don't know. I only found out about it because eBay informed me of the entire thing after it had been resolved.

Thanks for the advice. I acted contacted the seller away from eBay as the starting bid was too high. He wasn't using paypal anyway, so even on eBay I still could've got shafted - if I go for it it'll be either with cash on delivery or half now / half later type thing I think. Just such a lottery with these older horns ....

Amati F-helikon .. worth the money?
Probably not. I have one like it that's sure worth less, though to be fair, mine is more beat up. These Czech helicons are a little inflexible ergonomically speaking, and the clockspring valves are often worn and noisy. My F helicon's tone is not the sweetest ever, but on the positive side, the intonation is decent, and maybe because of the large bore, it speaks very well down through the low C, Bb etc. So it could be a useful instrument, for someone.

I have one too, ergonomic is NOT in its vocabulary.
