What a strange instrument. Either there is something wrong with the recording or it is pitched in E.

That's what happens when you play a tuba with a 1.5 G bass trombone mouthpiece.
Strangely enough, there are a few guys out there (including one who records, and then has to have his part overdubbed) who think it is perfectly OK to do that, even on a BBb.
