Found a custom made made instrument by Halama. Allegedly an F mellophone, but I rather suspect a single Bb horn. Never heard of that maker:

Re: F. K. Halama?
Very interesting information, which of course leads to new questions:
This one is left handed. One may see German left handed rotary mellophones. Even they are rare, as the mellophone there is a way to make surplus trumpet players man the horn parts. But I don’t remember seeing American left handed piston mellophones.
The adjustable pinkie hook sits in an odd place.
And then there is this circular crook under the 1st slide. Makes me think there is too much tubing for an F alto instrument. Is a dummy to stabilize the structure?

...unless its a piston French Horn.
I don't know the maker, but the wrap and style doesn't look like a mellophone.
It looks like a piston French Horn. There are older Mellophones that look like French Horns, but I don't think that this is one.

Very close to my own ideas, which made me pose the question in the first place.
