"What? There wasn't really a tuba in that box? But, but, but, my friend who gave it to me SAID it was a 186!"

Any time you buy something on ebay, there's risk. He could show you pictures of a 186, would that make any difference? In the end, if you pay his price, you have to trust him to send what he said he was selling.

On expensive items, eBay cases tend to go in favor of the seller, in my experience. If someone buys a box in which the seller claims there is a tuba and there isn't, but the seller discloses that he has not opened the box and looked, I would bet against the buyer.

I sure wouldn't want to be in a position where I needed ebay to make me whole. But that's a good reason not to trust anyone to send you a $6K tuba in the mail. This guy or anyone else you don't know. If you place absolute trust in someone because his story sounds typical and he has pictures, you're not thinking it through.

If anyone's actually thinking this would be good buy, I imagine we could come up with some ideas to mitigate the risk, but probably it's moot as we could all think of less adventurous more economical ways to get a 186.

People must be checking out his story as he has added the following to the listing
"This Just in: Stan from Taylor Music Called me, I guess He's been getting some calls- I guess I have a kind of have a wierd listing. It's OK to call Him/Them, I gave them permission to comment. Also, I went a an Insane buying spree, so don't think I didn't keep a TON of toys - I just never got around to enjoying this one properly, nor will I, it seems, soon, so that's why the still in the box picture (whitch it is). If you buy it or at least win, & still want me to open it and take/send pictures, I certainly will - it's still well packed from the factory. Thanks Folks"
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.

Well in the quote below from his listing he claims it was a gift from a friend. So which story is correct - he bought it as part of his "insane buying spree" or it was a "gift"? Changing stories usually are not a good sign.
I received this as one of two tubas a gift from a friend. It arrived last month brand-new from Taylor Music in Aberdeen SD. I took it off the pallet and put it in a spare room of my house & there it sits. The Box is Unopened, I still have the pallet - the Box looks to still be in excellent shape & the Tuba is in a MTS1209 Deluxe Heavy Duty Hrd Case with wheels. Paid $7,474.00 / paperwork - Currently Best Price Around!)
I need to get me some of those generous friends who give expensive tubas as gifts!
