It's been much discussed here. Since I have an example of the Holton 52, which Bloke says is internally pretty much the same, and I know to believe what Bloke says, I didn't bid on it. But all the chatter did make me very curious about it.

I think, the way he put that, it leaves little room for doubt that he's talking about that Conn 1 in the auction.

I would have guessed it would have gone higher, but I guess it's fair to assess a `beater' penalty. (By the way, I personally don't mind if the outside is all scraped up, so for buyers like me it's worthwhile to post a photograph of the rim.)

Again, I don't think this is the Conn 1 bloke refers to ... this looks, to me, more like a later model like the 2 or those Remington mouthpieces

It's sort of difficult to argue with the fact that it's clearly stamped 'Conn 1'.

No, I'm sorry, but I must agree with one of the previous posters. I think the Conn 1 that is stamped on the mouthpiece is clearly a mistake that was made at the factory. Even the Conn stamp is a mistake. This mouthpiece was made by Buescher in exchange for a new Conn.

Yes, they all did mean to say Conn 1 - Bloke has testified that it is internally very similar to the Conn Chief (and Holton 52) and is, of course, much less common than the Conn 2. . . don't know why.

The Conn "numbered" tuba mouthpieces were made with an exterior design like this well into the 90s, and perhaps later, until the "CKB" designation came to be.

The linked thread started with a picture of a mouthpiece that looked just like this and was called a "Conn 1"

As you can see in the thread, I looked at it and thought of all the Conn 2 beater mouthpieces that populated my high school band room.

Bloke went back and deleted the picture, not knowing that we would need it now to clarify what we're talking about in this thread.

So the point is not to get distracted by the outward appearance and focus on the internal dimensions.

So I got it and played on it. Damn.. nice mouthpiece. The inner rim diameter is very close to current Conn hellebergs but it is about .375 deeper, large throat and backbore, comfortable rim profile (much like a Conn 2). Very much a funnel so very efficient (no turbulence like a bowel). I'll be interested in trying this in my other horns.

But really, sounds like a neat mouthpiece. Looks so unsuspecting from the outside too, that's the cool part!

Cool! It's as I have always said, apparently, no one makes a funnel shaped mouthpiece like Conn.
