New information at the bottom of the seller's page indicates that this horn is a model 184. The bell diameter is 14 7/8".

Remember:

13 7/8" = model 183
14 7/8" = model 184
15 7/8" = model 185
16 7/8" (or thereabouts) = 186

It's easier than trying to remember the bore sizes!

I'm generally not a big Mirafone/Miraphone fan, but they are quality tubas. This is a vintage model in good shape. But Tinker is right - these things have been going for stupid high prices lately...

I believe those numbers are Dan's own conversions. The Miraphone website uses centimeters.

I don't think the Germans made any connection between their model numbers and the size of the bell in inches... other than sheer coincidence. It's just a handy way for me to think of it.

I have an original 1969 185 and it has a 14 7/8 bell. This horn looks a lot like it. The horn in question could very well be a 184 and Mirafone/Miraphone has been known to build to customer wants as well as they have been known to increase standard bell size over the years for the 184/185/186/187/188.

In this case however, the horn predates mine by 7 years and if it is an original 184 it has a bell the same size as a 185 built 7 years later. I know other 185's of my vintage with the 15" bell like mine. If you're are looking for a 184 you might want to get a few more specs from the seller like bore size. 185's are great horns too if that is what the horn on fleabay turns out to be - but they are different from 184's and you don't want to be surprised when it shows up on your doorstep.

This is true. The comments I posted about bell size correlation to model number is only an observation and not necessarily a fact. You're mileage may vary.
