There are plenty of people selling stuff on ebay who have no idea what they have. I have seen a bassoon listed as a clarinet, then someone told them it was an oboe, finally someone convinced them it was a bassoon. In many cases they are the best people from whom to buy.
On the other hand, that "Y" in York has a very large connected top part and a very small tail that makes it very easy to confuse for a "D," especially if it is a little worn and tarnished.

Well, considering that there wasn't even a "York and Sons" until 1898, I hardly think it could be considered "civil war era". And anyone that can't be bothered to research the other "Dork" instruments on Ebay or already know York will likely not know TubeNet when it bites them on their <insert favorite posterior euphemism here>!
