I have just posted my Holton MF Superbone valve/slide combination trombone on ebay. It's a real nice horn.

I have seen superbones before, but never understood the point. Do you use the slide and valves at the same time? Why would you want to? I seem to remember Dillon music having a Conn that had both slide and valves at the same time, and even a J.W. Pepper from the 1890s that had this configuration, but never understood the utility.

Please elucidate.

I can't claim any expertise on Superbones, but I can imagine at least one practical application. A doubler who really isn't that proficient with slide positions could learn most of their jazz licks in Bb, and then use the valves to take them to the appropriate key as necessary.

Obviously that practice would have its limitations, but I've seen it done.
