I think it's just raw brass... but exposure to mild acids will turn a horn reddish. Soldering flux will create this color on brass if it's not neutralized.

Red rot works from the inside out and usually shows up with just a few small spots at first. A horn with this much red showing would be literally falling apart.quinterbourne wrote:So how would you distinguish between this and red rot???
