I have seen alot of chatter about this particular instrument maker as the York of Germany. This one is old, but looks well preserved and is going to go for a song!!!!

Yeah... I looked at that one for quite a while. I've been intending to email the seller but it slipped my feeble mind.

In Germany B&F may have the same cachet that old Yorks have in this Country, but Grasliitz is not in Germany last I looked, although it may have been at one time. B&F is one of the companies that was subsumed by the Amati group after WWII, and Graslitz is in what is now known as the Czech republic. Markneukirchen, Germany is about 20 or so miles from Graslitz, so I think at some time Graslitz may have been under German control. Anyone know for certain?

It's known as the Sudeten--I believe that Mr. Hitler sought to liberate the persecuted ethnic German national socialists in Czechoslovakia.

After the war, the Czech government nationalized most of the businesses that were owned by ethnic Germans.

FWIW, many "American" stencils from the turn of the century are B&F made.

I think you have to send your email in French:
Seller's payment instructions

And you people wouldn't trust such a person! Image

I'm not even sure that fraud HAS taken place until payment is made for goods or services that are then not received. Of course, I'm just guessing, but it sure seems like a lot of trouble to confirm something you just *think* is fishy...

DP wrote:For you guys and your intrigue about fraud, here's a tip: place a bid on the item in question, then request the seller's contact information from e-bay. If it comes back bogus, rat 'em out and e-bay will make the auction go away (thus preserving your precious 'feedback rating') If the contact info is legit, you just sleuthed your way into a bit more confidence you are dealing with a real person (one of over 5 billion real persons in the world, I might add)
It doesn't work that way, Dale. Most of these frauds are perpetrated by slimeballs hijaking legitimate user accounts (there's a whole underground distribution of accounts and passwords--why else do you think eBay has a real problem with "phishing"?).

An email to the seller asking for information about the item that a fraudster wouldn't have usually ferrets out the crooks.

FYI... I did receive a response to my request for more pictures. The seller said he would try to get someone to take some pics and send them to me. I kind of got the impression that the seller is not where the horn is. The response was in broken French/Spanish??.

That's consistent with what the ad was in...

I asked for the diameter of the bell. The respondent told me:

I do not have any idea... for the moment I am on holiday in another country and I cannot answer you I will try to have an answer

Well... this auction is closed. The high bidder is listed as being a member since January 10, 2006.... with no feedback.... and is in Portugal. The winner paid over $800 for this horn. Makes me think it is a scam or the buyer is a 'friend' of the seller. Whatever!

"B-tuba" = "BBb tuba"

Does that mean the 2nd and 3rd valve are stuck?
Yes. He figures that all it'll take is some adjustment.
