Neat-oh! Let's see....how can I rationalize this? How can I sell the rationalization to my wife?

I'd love to get my hands on it as well. I wonder what the reserve is?

I gotta say that it is a beautiful tuba. However, I can't imagine bidding enough money to win without having the chance to play it.

Anybody have experience with copper tubas?

You bet! They will have to delay the bidding a bit though, I'm on the road for a while.

I wonder how much it would cost me to have my horn coated in copper when I have it overhauled?

Check with the U.S. Mint to see if they are busy now. If not, I'm sure they would do it for free since being of service to American citizens is the highest calling of government.

It looks more like the rose brass than copper??? It has that reddish color to it, or is it just me???

bloke wrote:It is copper, and Ryan, it actually won't cost that much to coat your instrument in copper.

I was going to bid on it just now, but since the bidders identities are hidden - and I wouldn't meet the reserve - what would be the point?

That's good to know because that finish will definitely be on the short list if the cash is ever right. That is one good looking horn.

It was my understanding from another post that it was solid copper. Correct or not?

Copper plating of brass would be easy-, that's how Oberloh builds up surfaces so he can buff 'em smooth and then silver plate 'em.

A reliable source told me long ago that it's really copper. The same source told me that, while the Sander has a wonderful sound, the intonation is "interesting" (which is not to disparage Fred Marzan's opinion; if anything, it reflects what a phenomenal musician the man was).

In contrast to most of the Marzan's I have seen, this one doesn't have the main tuning slide accessable from above.

.....still purty though!

historic value and copper notwithstanding, I think I'd rather have a real Marzan with the upward main slide.Does anyone know if the smaller piston Willson/Marzan has the upward main slide?

Yep, it sure does. I assume you mean the horn (Solo Model) in the lower left corner of this image (courtesy TubaTinker's website...Thanks, Dan). You can see the slide on the outside edge of the tuba opposite the bell. I have one of these babies and love it. Solid, well-built, and fun to play.

WTF - it's not even a great horn.

Copper plating appears to be even easier than silver. My bet is that this horn is plated. It would be WAY too expensive to actually make a horn out of copper.
Think of when this horn was made.. Copper wouldn't have been as expensive then. In any case I understand that it is actually made of copper, not plated.

That copper tuba is not a Marzan. It's a Sander. Good advertising for a fellow who was having his own name put on horns!

You know, that aluminum-plated bell looks really neat. I've never seen that on a Marzan before... :P
