Hit the archives. These horns have been discussed frequently here and a fairly regular poster owned one. From what I have read they are alot more nimble than they appear and are quite good instruments. This thing looks like it eats Yorks for breakfast and shits PT-6's with regularity.

There is absolutely nothing nimble about this horn.

The auction shows the horncomes with a case. The case has straps for carrying it on one's back. I think one would have to hire the Governator to tote it around. It should actually come with a car trailer. Or a dedicated Volkswagen transporter.....

The Neptune is a really big horn,especially the bell.The rudy is half again as big IMO,absolutely huge.I don't really see a practical application for one,but your friends would surely be impressed...

Quite agreed! As far as the bell is concerned, it is as much bigger than the Neptune as the Neptune is the PT-20. It is difficult to see what's the practical use of the Rudy - but it still has its enormous, earth shaking attractions!

The bidding ended very recently. The winning bid was 2410 Euro, about 3300 USD.
Quite a reasonably price for such a tuba.
But then you have to pick it up in south Germany. No shipping!

Too bad I wasn't fond of them. They are just genuinely too big for anything I'd ever need. The respond a little quicker than you would think, with a small mouthpiece in it, I wasn't carrying anything bigger at the time than an C4, but even then, they are application specific.


Who am I kidding. I'd take one in a heartbeat, but I just wouldn't be able to play it in 80% of the things I do.

My German only consists of a few food items, did it actually sell for that or was that just the highest bid? If so, this would be one of the biggest tuba bargains ever(comparing new price to ebay price).I think new ones are in the high teens,low 20k range.I wonder if the rest of my quintet would help me drag it up into the balcony at that church we play in?....You could keep a block and tackle in the bell along with your BBC tuba stand....

My understanding is that it actually sold - there was no reserve price.

Actually the weight given in the advert was not that great. No heavier than a B&S Neptune and I am sure a lot lighter than an old Conn 25J I tried. Must be thinner metal due to being hand made.

I thought long and hard about bidding, as I could have driven over to collect (about 1600 mile round trip) - but in the end decided against. I just could not image that I would ever use such a monster enough!

Is not the Rudy 6/4 unique in its huge size? So I would guess very few are around, even in Germany.

I can't help thinking that most German players must feel this is just too large, by the relatively low price for which it sold.

I bet a 5/4 would have sold for much more.
