It does seem like the main tuning slide has been removed/lost and rather ingeniously someone has stuck trumpet bells to the open ends...
Cunning.
Can't see why this never took off in a big way (perhaps it did... somewhere...).

Bloke, your fascination with circlophoniums is leading you to more and more advanced rebuilds. This one would surely be able to crank out the double-pedal register and prevent everybody else from kicking @zz. I am impressed!
