I think it is the same model tuba as seen in this clip of The Band (non-detachable bell though). yes?

I thought the Meinl-Weston Howard Johnson was a modern copy of the Mahillon?

Yup. The Meinl-Weston is the expensive copy of HoJo's Mahillon.

Chicken or egg? Which?

Well, if it plays anything like the Meinl-Weston it would make a good (cheap) small ensemble tuba for a BBb player.

No....Dang it!
When my daughter was 5 and my son 7, we were driving one day and they were driving me insane with endless questions. I decided to turn the tables on them and ask them one: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? My son said, well god made the first chicken so, the chicken. To which my daughter replied: "God Doesn't Lay Eggs!"
I thought it was the perfect answer.

I hope the buyer got a good one because it went fast- $1K 'Buy It Now'. Just about any 'known' 4v BBb that isn't thrashed will go for more than that.... This one wasn't perfect by any means but it wasn't a beater. Perfect for playing jazz. Just like Howard Johnson..

All kidding aside, that seller has been selling off some decent BBb horns: a Conn 2XJ, a King 1240, the Mahillon in this thread, and currently a Martin recording bass. The Conn was in so-so shape, but the rest have been nice looking. Good ol' boy from TX getting too old to schlep big horns around he says. Quite a stable so far.
