Whatcha think TNFJ?

This horn looks like a run-O-the-mill King 1240 to me.

I thought the same thing when I first saw it, but I'm no King person, so I just let it go...

In a somewhat related note, I have a 1241 with a recording bell, but I'd like for it to be more useful for me. If I want an upright bell (I'd have the recording bell removed and put the upright bell in its place), for what should I be looking?

You would have a more versatile horn if you simply had both a recording bell AND an upright bell for your King. Sam Gnagey had some upright detachable bells for sale a few months back. He's a frequent poster here.

Yahbut I'd prefer a fixed, upright bell. My horn has a fixed recording bell. I'm not interested in chopping off that bell and attaching a collar because of the great engraving. I'd rather remove it and pack it away someplace safe. Just in case....

Ahhh.... you've got a REAL King 1240. I understand what you mean now. I have a King 1235 (Eb) and I feel the same way.

Gnagey may still have what you are looking for. He seems to have a lot of bells around for his various horns that he builds - PM him.

RE: which King tubas Bill Bell played or endorsed, looks like he at least posed with the 1240/1: http://www.hnwhite.com/King/Low%20Brass ... 0Large.jpg Of course he is most often associated with the rotary valve Symphony Bass, but did any King model ever actually bear his name?
