Does this seem like a decent deal/good idea? Or even legit? I'm gonna send them a message to see if I may be able to have some sort of trial. Thank you all in advance for your advice.

I'm new around here but am in quick need of a CC Tuba. If any one is looking to sell a decent one, I'm looking to spend around (hopefully less than is possible) $5000ish. Thanks again all.

Well, the opening bid seems about right. Kalison's can be decent tubas. Though sometimes annoying, but for a first CC they are not bad.

This looks like a good deal. Most Kalisons are "pretty okay," but some are better/worse than others. The ones that don't turn out very well can be real dogs, but the good ones can hold their own with 4/4 horns that go for twice as much.

FWIW, I never found a 4/4* that I liked well enough to make me part with my DS.



*I did, however fall in love with another (5/4) and my Kalison is consequently for sale

This seller is absolutely legit, and a good friend. He's fair and excellent. I just bought my Kalison DS CC from him a few months ago (in lacquer). He's a low brass player too and knows his stuff.

He's also selling a YCB-621S for a good price...

Hey J.C - thanks very much for the vote of confidence in the seller, that makes me feel a bit better. For someone looking to do work at a professional level with orchestras/wind ensembles as well as quintet work, do you think that this would be a decent investment? I've heard of the line, but am not overly familiar with it or what is strengths and weaknesses are, and although the price is great, I don't want to have to buy another one later on because this one isn't "good enough." Again, thanks for any and all guidance!

Some very nice looking 188s have shown up lately on tubenet, as well as one of Sam Gnagey's horns. Both models are extremely consistent and reliable.

I'm not qualified to give you any guidance myself, but I hate to see good guidance gone to waste, so would direct your attention a couple of posts back:

To me, that means it's worth checking out, but no one's going to want to guarantee anything. The seller is a good guy - I haven't actually bought anything from him, but I have met him and he has a top notch reputation - but he's not going to be responsible for your expectations. It's a great price, for someone who can accept a little risk.

Donn's right on the money. I've owned two; shouldn't've sold the first one. Love mine, and it's a very good all-around instrument. One of my quintet's loves it, and I've used these in major professional bands and orchestras. The good ones are - indeed - very good. The bad ones are often incorrectly ported or badly adjusted...

My two cents. I prefer playing my smaller instruments. But in situations where I want to show up with a "normal" tuba, or when asked, it's a fabulous and very lyrical instrument.

YMMV I might trade for a MW 2000.... but nothing else, I think...
