I'd like to know who did the work on that leadpipe. I have one that needs a little work.

Yes, it seems to be a Monster Eb.
If you are willing to invest a considerable amount of money with a fine repairman, you can end up with a mild and big sounding Eb that plays in tune. (Without doubt in an original state it will absolutely not play in tune).
That last aspect is the most difficult about these instruments. After some time of calculating I had all branches shortened and now it is perfectly playable in tune. Next to that I had added a 4th valve and done a total overhaul. The result is a tuba with a lovely mild sound, that is great in flexibility, easiness of playing and eveness of sound. But.....as I said: it was quite an investment.

Surely you wouldn't want the same guy who did THAT work to fix your leadpipe?

Well..... yeah. It reminds me of one those 'band parent' repairs that I love to see so much. Right up there with duct tape and wire ties!

What if someone is motivated to rescue that thing, clean up the atrocious mess that was made of the leadpipe, and play it in some kind of stand-up situation with a small group? Front valves, probably light as a feather, fairly substantial tone. I wouldn't blame him - obviously a little optimistic, but you really never know.

Even if we feel bound to let bloke have dibs (and destroy an old classic Eb monster bass), how do you know whom you're bidding against? The action will happen in the closing seconds, and you just have to bid what it's worth at that time. You can't save it specifically for bloke, if he isn't the high bidder at that point. (I don't even know how to recognize whether he has bid or not - don't see anything at this time about bloke, mid-south, etc.) If you have plans for it, bid, and take him at his word that he isn't going to hold it against you.

What if you sell the bell to Bloke for a really reasonable price? ($50)

Or, perhaps have a bell exchange.
