Actually, I did cut a McDonald's straw as a double reed, and got some fat pedal tones. It is genius. I'll post a vid tomorrow.

Some tubas come with a bit of cork on the water keys where the key hits the slide bow. Once they fall off (after about 5 minutes of use) the key then hits the slide bow each time it's used. Normally not big deal. I did have one tuba that would make a loud audible "clink" when this happened.

Actually, my Couesnon flugelhorn water keys came with a small scrap of felt stuck between the spring and the key... stopping the ersatz percussion just as effectively!
