HELLO, I AM AUCTIONING A SILVER PLATED 1918 CONN ORCHESTRA GRAND TUBA MODEL 34J IN 'CC'. I SAY BUILT IN 'CC' BECAUSE THE SLIDES HAVE DRESS RINGS INTACT.

Forgive my ignorance, but does anyone have any idea what this means?

Oh....kay. Read my post again. I'm not asking what dress rings are. I'm asking what they have to do with a tuba being "built in CC." It makes me wonder if the tuba is really in C or the seller doesn't have a clue what that means. The key of the horn certainly doesn't depend on those dress rings...the sentence makes no sense.

Can anyone decipher that sentence or should I just post a question on the auction listing?

Is the 34J a 6/4 tuba?

I was also thinking that is kind of small for this tuba. Could it be possible that this Conn was labeled wrong?

It looks like a cut job to me. All of the inner bows are squashed together towards the upper bow. There's a BIG hole just above the bottom bow.

I take this to mean that the owner wasn't or isn't 100% sure that it is originally in CC. Whatever he or she means about dress rings, it means that he or she was probably looking for evidence as to whether it was cut or not. There is probably some doubt in his or her mind. The way CC is single quoted also leads me to think this. Despite whether it is cut or not cut, it could be a nice tuba.

A-ha! "Built in CC" as in "originally in C" as in "not cut from a Bb." Now the comment about the dress rings makes sense.

I miss read his statement and thought He said this was smaller, but
this is every bit a 5/4 tuba and should be quite good if it works properly as He suggests

Based on the pictures and measurements (18 3/4" bell), I would say it is probably about the same size as the BBb Monster, or the Eb Giant, or the "Donatelli," but with a smaller bell flare
Large 4/4-Compact 5/4. Definitely not a "6/4 Grand Orchestral"
Below is a pic of the horn in question, followed by pics of comparably sized CC and Eb Conns:

I’d wager to say that this tuba was not cut, but rather lengthened from Eb. The somewhat golfclub like tuning slide and the double looped tubing after that lead me to believe this.
