I have one of those. The tuning slide is in the leadpipe, and that section lies against the body, next to and in the same plane as the first valve loop. On this one, I guess it ain't a tuning slide any more, and that strut between it and the first valve loop is of course not from the factory. That's the only damage I can see that looks like it was done on purpose. Ergonomics aren't one of this tuba's strengths; that's the only reason I can think of for it, though I can't see how it would help.
