Do kids have to buy their own these days? .... or is there a sousa at school that's missing one of these?

Kids had to buy their own when I was in school (78-82). Did that change after that?

When I was in high school, (97-01), we only had to buy them if we lost/damaged them.

I guess the folks before us either abused or lost the necks. By the time I got there, we had to purchase neck, bits, and mouthpiece within a week of starting band camp. I just thought everyone did it this way.

Exactly. That's why making students buy a neck and bits makes no sense. The instrument is completely useless without them and the neck/bits are useless apart from the instrument. Did your baritone players have to buy a tuning slide? Did snare drummers provide their own carrier attachments?

What a weird and completely ridiculous policy.

I completely understand having to replace a neck and bits that you lost. I think that's the way it should be.

Brett... I can't imagine having to buy this stuff just because a kids wants to start a band program. Some of the kids opt to buy their own mouthpieces, though.
