Looks like it probably had the original "Martin Bits" and then somebody choped the end of the leadpipe off and stuck a regular receiver on it, the mouthpiece doesn't seem to come around far enough.
The body of the horn seems to be in decent shape - could possibly make a great 4 piston front-action conversion, possibly even a 5 valve cut to CC?
(Or one could play it as-is and have a nice big top-action BBb, but may still need to do something about the leadpipe, else hold the tuba York-style.)

Neat... Hard to tell the size of the tuba though. Even with the gigantic Martin bows, and the description of a 20" bell and 40" height, it doesn't look like a 6/4. Does look neat though, and I hope it doesn't get all chopped to hell and rebuilt as a new tuba.

It's funny. None of the people who I expected to talk about this horn are talking about it.

"This isn't the tuba you are looking for." <slight wave>

I just measured my King 1241 and it is around 40" tall. The Martin in the auction is MUCH fatter. So I believe it is a 6/4 horn.

This vintage horn went for over $1500 and only has 3 top action pistons and is in "OK" shape? Seriously? :| The valves look out of alignment.

I doubt the new owner will be keeping the three valve configuration....

True. Could be a "project horn" for someone that has money.

Who knows? Maybe it will end up in the hands of mr oberloh or gnagey. They certainly know how to make a Martin pretty.
